It was not always pretty for the New Orleans Saints in their 19-17 win against the Los Angeles Chargers — in fact, at times things looked downright ugly.  The offense did not run at the smooth clip the Saints are accustomed to. Former NASCAR and Formula One driver Scott Speed remains in a Utah hospital after suffering three broken vertebrae in his back following a hard landing on a jump during qualifying Friday for the American RallyCross Championship Nitro World Games in Salt Lake City. Even with the injuries he suffered and the pain he was in, the 36-year-old California native remained in his Subaru USA car to finish the qualifying session before he climbed out and was immediately sent to a Salt Lake City hospital. Seattle Seahawks  rookie receiver  DK Metcalf  needs knee surgery, but coach Pete Carroll expressed optimism that he won't be sidelined for long. "DK's got an injury to his knee that we found after a couple days," Carroll told reporters Sunday night after the Seahawks' 25-19 preseason loss to the Vikings in Minneapolis. "It happened a few days back. So there's something. We're gonna do some work on it Tuesday and get him back in a hurry. So we're disappointed for him because he was off to a fantastic start, but I don't think this is gonna derail him for long. But he does have to have some work done, and we'll know more about that when we get back into town." Cedric Benson, a running back who was a dominant force for the University of Texas before an eight-year career in the National Football League, died on Saturday. He was 36. His friends and family  told The Austin American-Statesman  that he had been in a motorcycle crash. The police responded to a crash in Austin, Tex., involving a motorcycle with a man and a woman on it and a minivan around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, said Officer Marcos Johnson, a spokesman for the Austin Police Department. The minivan was pulling away from a stop sign when the crash occurred and both vehicles caught fire, he said. The woman on the motorcycle died immediately. The man was conscious and alert when officers pulled him away but died moments later, Officer Johnson said. Two adults in the minivan had injuries that were not life-threatening, Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Service  said on Twitter .
